Why do athletes train?
Many athletes train to get bigger, faster, and stronger. They target large muscle groups and can physically see changes in their muscle mass and strength. They look at their training as a list of things they must do and cross off. For example, only two more sets of 15 reps and I'm done.
There are three problems with using traditional strength training and weight lifting as your only means of training.
1. Focusing on only the large muscle groups leaves the small muscle groups vulnerable to injury.
2. Adding bulk without incorporating a stretching routine limits your flexibly and overall mobility.
3. Strength training does not teach you to train your mind to be conscious of your body and breath.
Why Yoga?
Yoga improves overall fitness including strength, flexibility, balance, core strength, and cardiovascular ability.
Yoga not only adds flexibility but also strengthens the hundreds of small muscle groups that help support the larger muscle groups.
Yoga makes you conscious of the mind-body connection. The ability to focus your mind is a skill that athletes must master to be at the top of their games.
In any sport the athletes that have a conscious connection with their mind, body, and breath do better than their peers who do not have the connection.
